Amazon Hazmat Guide

How To Sell Hazmat On Amazon & Easily Make More Money
The information in this guide provides direction for selling on Amazon.com (the US site). Here you will learn:
Why you should sell dangerous goods, also known as hazmat on Amazon.
Hazmat, i.e., hazardous materials are gated – restricted. Amazon requires sellers to get special approval for selling goods in this category. The approval process is straightforward and requires some additional paperwork.
Currently, there is a waitlist to get ungated. Even if you’re not looking to sell products marked as hazardous right now, chances are you’ll want to sell something in this market soon.
Why might you want to sell something “dangerous”?
Goods in this category usually have a healthy profit margin. However, given the initial barrier, many sellers don’t attempt to sell goods in the hazmat category, leaving less competition and more room to profit.
- To join the waitlist: Go to Manage Dangerous Goods Classification in your Seller Central Account.
- Choose the FBA Dangerous Goods program option.
- Click Apply to the FBA Dangerous Goods program.
Which products may be regulated as dangerous goods.
Everyday items may be categorized and regulated as hazmat. These items may pose a risk during storing, handling, or transporting because they contain flammable, pressurized, corrosive, or otherwise harmful substances.
Amazon follows safety standards to prevent potential health and safety risks.
You can use the Look up an ASIN tool on Seller Central to see where a particular FBA ASIN is classified. Go to Inventory > Manage Inventory > Add a Product.
Common household items like hairspray, nail polish and dishwashing powder can be part of the dangerous goods market.
There are different classifications for dangerous goods.
- Class 1: Explosives
- Class 2: Gasses
- Class 3: Flammable liquids
- Class 4: Flammable solids
- Class 5: Oxidizing agents & organic peroxides
- Class 6: Toxins and infectious substances
- Class 7: Radioactive material
- Class 8: Corrosives
- Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous goods
How to determine if your product is a dangerous good.
Amazon’s Dangerous Goods team reviews each ASIN converted to Fulfilled by Amazon to determine if the product is identified as a possible dangerous good. If you haven’t done so yet, Amazon may require you to upload an SDS or exemption sheet. This process enables Amazon to meet regulatory requirements and safety standards for customers and Amazon employees.
You can use the Look up an ASIN tool on Seller Central to see where a particular FBA ASIN is classified. Go to Inventory > Manage Inventory > Add a Product.
Can dangerous goods be sold through FBA?
Yes! They may even be Prime eligible. However, many of these goods only qualify for ground delivery due to transportation regulations. Therefore, these dangerous goods would have a 4-5 day shipping time frame versus the usual two-day delivery.
Note: It’s important to note that some hazmat items cannot be shipped via FBA. Be sure to confirm that you can ship the item you want.
